River and Stream Restoration

Round River Design has extensive experience in the assessment and development of restoration plans for watercourses ranging from large watersheds to small streams.

STREAM GEOMORPHIC ASSESSMENTS: Michael has been conducting stream geomorphic assessments using the protocols developed by the Vermont River Management Program since 2002 (the year the VTDEC introduced Geomorphic Assessment Protocols, a database system, and SGAT version 1). Michael has studied thirteen major Vermont rivers of varied size and condition. Michael has developed several river corridor managment plans, most recently identifying priority restoration projects on the Otter Creek and Mill River.

STREAM HABITAT RESTORATION: Michael has been involved in numerous habitat assessment and riparian restoration installations. Our clients have included the NRCS, VTDEC, towns, and numerous private landowners.

FLUVIAL EROSION MAPPING: Round River Design has conducted valley wall verifications for numerous streams in Vermont. Most recently, RRD assisted in the development of state-wide valley wall mapping protocols for the Vermont River Management Program as part of a contract with the Chittenden Regional Planning Commission.

WATER QUALITY PERMITTING: Michael has operated a water quality montitoring program on the Mad River as well as assisted in the reporting of Vermont’s indirect discharge permits and assisting in meeting FERC permit requirements. RRD is able to provide technical assistance and recommendations for water quality improvements and sediment and erosion control.

BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS: Round River Design provides biomonitoring for aquatic macroinvertebrates, fish and amphibian population monitoring.

BRIDGE AND CULVERT ASSESSMENT: Round River Design has conducted bridge and culvert assessments on numerous watersheds. Michael attended the three-day workshop on Aquatic Organism Passage and is available for the assessment and assistance in design to meet these standards.
